Cost Per Customer: A Real Meta Ads Case Study
Cost per customer is the number every advertiser wants and few can see. In this case study, CDAI connected a real senior care provider's Meta ads, HubSpot contacts and paid invoices. It reconciled $4,475.85 of ad spend to the cent, followed 491 Facebook leads through their stages, and sorted 65 paid invoices by source. The client, Apex Care Solutions, agreed to the use of its real account data.
Cost Per Customer at a Glance
These are the money numbers from the account, each one traced to the client's own records.
Why Cost Per Customer Beats Cost Per Lead
An ad platform reports leads the moment they arrive. That makes cost per lead easy to read and quick to improve. It also stops at the form fill.
Cost per customer goes one step further. It divides ad spend by the paying customers the ads produced. That is the number that connects ad money to revenue. The general idea is known as customer acquisition cost.
To calculate cost per customer, three records have to meet: the ad spend, the CRM contact and the invoice. Most businesses keep them in three different tools. CDAI joins them. Read Case Study #1 to see how CDAI handles data quality across platforms.
The Account: A Real Senior Care Provider on Meta
Apex Care Solutions is a senior care provider. It ran Meta ads across 10 campaigns from January 1 to July 27, 2026, tracked its contacts in HubSpot, and received invoices into HubSpot from its accounting tool.
CDAI read three sources, all read-only: the Meta ad account, the HubSpot contact and invoice exports, and the engine's own records. No record in the client's accounts was changed.
Step One: Spend Reconciled to the Cent
The first requirement for any cost per customer is spend you can trust. CDAI recalculated the spend for every campaign in every month and compared it with Meta's own figures. The two matched to the cent in all 7 months, with 0 differences, and the totals also match Meta's own account-level monthly reports.
| Month | Meta ad spend | Leads reported by Meta | Facebook contacts in HubSpot | Link clicks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 2026 | $829.96 | 143 | 96 | 780 |
| Feb 2026 | $742.15 | 14 | 14 | 273 |
| Mar 2026 | $455.75 | 38 | 37 | 312 |
| Apr 2026 | $389.07 | 19 | 19 | 381 |
| May 2026 | $630.01 | 132 | 129 | 555 |
| Jun 2026 | $640.29 | 92 | 88 | 478 |
| Jul 2026 | $788.62 | 109 | 108 | 751 |
| Total | $4,475.85 | 547 | 491 | 3,530 |
Step Two: Every Lead Followed to Its Stage
CDAI followed the 491 Facebook-origin contacts through HubSpot's lifecycle stages. As of October 17, 2026, 443 were Lead, 41 were Opportunity, 5 were Other and 2 were Customer.
This is the lead-to-customer funnel in one view, built from the client's own CRM. An ad dashboard cannot show it, because it never sees what happens after the form fill. Meta and HubSpot also agree on lead volume, within a few leads each month from February to July.
Step Three: Every Invoice Matched to Its Source
The last link in cost per customer is the invoice. CDAI matched each of the client's 65 paid invoices, $112,620.02 in total, to its HubSpot contact and to that contact's recorded first source.
| Paid invoices, April to October 2026 | Count | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed: HubSpot records Facebook as the contact's first source | 3 | $125.54 |
| Unattributed: a contact is attached, but no ad source is recorded for it | 36 | $83,486.80 |
| Unverified: no contact is attached to the invoice | 26 | $29,007.68 |
| All paid invoices | 65 | $112,620.02 |
CDAI's own invoice matching agreed with this table: 39 invoices linked to a contact and 3 tied to a campaign.
Where a source is recorded, CDAI attributes the revenue to it. Where it is not, CDAI keeps the revenue unattributed or unverified and reports it on its own line. It never assumes a channel for it. That rule is what makes every attributed dollar in the final figure defensible.
What CDAI Shows That Dashboards Do Not
Meta showed 547 leads. HubSpot showed $112,620.02 of invoices. Neither one connects the two. CDAI did:
- Spend to the cent. Every campaign, every month, matched to Meta.
- One funnel. 491 Facebook leads, through 41 opportunities, to 2 customers.
- Revenue in three groups. 65 paid invoices sorted into confirmed, unattributed and unverified, each on its own line.
- No invented attribution. A dollar is credited to an ad only when a record says so.
How to Get Your Own Cost Per Customer
You can calculate cost per customer when three things are true. Your leads sit in a CRM. Each paid invoice is attached to a CRM contact. The contact records where it first came from.
CDAI reads all three alongside your ad spend and returns true cost per lead and true CAC from your own data. See Case Study #1 and the CDAI validation report for how the engine is tested.
Cost Per Customer Questions
What is cost per customer?
Cost per customer is ad spend divided by the number of paying customers the ads produced. It is the number that shows whether ad money turns into revenue, and it needs a record that connects each lead to the invoice it later became.
How is cost per customer different from cost per lead?
Cost per lead divides spend by leads and comes straight from the ad platform. Cost per customer divides spend by paying customers, so it needs the lead, the CRM contact and the invoice joined together. In this account the first number was $8.18 per lead across 547 leads.
What did CDAI connect in this case study?
CDAI connected the Meta ad account, the HubSpot contacts and the paid invoices. It reconciled spend to the cent, followed 491 Facebook-origin contacts through their HubSpot stages, and sorted 65 paid invoices into confirmed, unattributed and unverified revenue.
What does CDAI do when an invoice cannot be traced to an ad?
CDAI keeps it unattributed or unverified and reports it separately. It never assumes a channel for revenue it cannot trace, so every attributed dollar is backed by a record.
What do I need to calculate my own cost per customer?
You need three links: leads in a CRM, each paid invoice attached to a CRM contact, and the first source recorded on that contact. CDAI reads all three alongside your ad spend.
